Why is diversity so important?

The Australian Government values the principles of diversity and inclusion with respect to the composition of Australian Government boards, and considers diversity a fundamental component of creating a fairer, more inclusive Australia.

Diversity on Australian Government boards enhances the richness of the board as a whole. The combined contribution of a group of individuals able to draw on a variety of different skills, perspectives, experiences, backgrounds and lifestyles leads to issues being considered in a rounded and holistic way.

Boardrooms representative of the diversity of the population as a whole, including in terms of cultural differences, linguistic abilities and people with disabilities, can have a positive impact on the corporate governance, decision-making and financial performance of an entity.
